Mestizx
Bolivian-born singer/multi-medium performer Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti and Chicago expat jazz drummer Frank Rosaly, partners in marriage and art based in Amsterdam, debut as co-composers/arrangers/musicians on MESTIZX. This deeply personal album explores their Bolivian, Brazilian, and Puerto Rican ancestral roots, meditating on decolonization and the power of ritual/protest. Titled MESTIZX – a non-gendered take on the colonial term for a "mixed person" – the album embraces and challenges their liminal identities and artistic practices. Rosaly explains the album gives voice to his in-between cultural experience, while Ferragutti sees MESTIZX as recognizing the difficult yet powerful state of being "mixed." Recorded primarily at International Anthem Studios in Chicago with a community of musicians, MESTIZX creatively blends Latin rhythms with avant jazz, art punk, and other genres, creating a unique yet universal sound reminiscent of artists like Juana Molina, Max Roach & Abbey Lincoln, and Tom Zé. Ultimately, MESTIZX is a conscious collection of autobiographical statements on the impact of colonialism on identity, finding resilience in communal and celebratory music.
Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti is an Amsterdam-based multi-medium artist (performer, theatre maker, vocalist, visual artist, musician, teacher) raised in Bolivia with Bolivian and Brazilian heritage. Her work addresses post-colonial justice, Andean cosmology, and resilience. She has collaborated with artists like Alabaster DePlume and jaimie branch and co-founded Amsterdam's MOLK FACTORY.
Frank Rosaly is a Puerto Rican drummer/composer/sound designer based in Amsterdam, known for his work in Chicago's jazz and improvised music scene. With over 150 recordings, he has collaborated with artists like Fennesz and Jeff Parker. He self-releases music on the MOLK label and co-founded MOLK FACTORY.
